Beautiful vintage Chinese porcelain decorative plate featuring a dramatic black-ground garden scene with a pair of long-tailed pheasant or phoenix-type birds, flowering branches, peonies and other colorful blossoms. The center is surrounded by a vivid yellow border decorated with stylized flowers and cloud-like motifs.
The decoration is executed in colorful overglaze enamels using a palette related to famille rose, while the extensive black ground is commonly described in the antiques trade as famille noire. Pink, green, turquoise, yellow, blue, orange and white enamels contrast strongly against the glossy black background.
The underside is glazed white and bears a small hand-painted iron-red Chinese-style mark.
