Clyde Pottery Gondola Blue Transferware Plate 10 1/4 Scotland Antique c1848
A wonderful early Victorian Scottish blue-and-white transferware plate produced by the Clyde Pottery Company of Greenock, Scotland. Dating to approximately 1844–1851, this is the factory's documented Gondola pattern and is now roughly 175 years old.
The center features an elaborate romanticized waterside scene with an ornate sailing vessel carrying several figures, backed by fanciful Italianate architecture. Surrounding the central medallion are abundant sprays of flowers, foliage and shells, finished with an intricate cobalt-blue border and gracefully scalloped rim.
The underside carries the distinctive blue GONDOLA transfer-printed backstamp. Inverclyde Council's museum documentation describes this pattern as featuring an improbable multi-oared boat with a stern canopy in a lake scene with Italianate buildings and dates the Gondola mark to 1844–1851.
