Chouinard Equipment 5pc set Hexentric Climbing Wired Hex Nuts #3 4 5 2x#6 c1980s
Interesting vintage lot of six wired climbing protection pieces, apparently consisting primarily of early Chouinard Equipment Hexentrics/hex nuts from the classic American rock-climbing era. The aluminum heads are permanently swaged onto steel wire cable loops, with several pieces retaining old color-coded identification labels.
The clearest markings visible on the aluminum heads include the distinctive Chouinard-style diamond “C” logo with U.S.A., along with size numbers including #3, #4, #5 and two #6's. These are passive climbing protection devices designed to be wedged into cracks in rock and removed after the climber passes.
The pieces show substantial age and genuine climbing-related wear, including oxidation, scratches, discoloration, aged plastic sleeves/labels and some visible corrosion on the cables. Because vintage climbing protection has an unknown service history and materials can deteriorate with age, these should be sold as collectibles/display pieces only—not for climbing or life-safety use.
They are particularly appealing as artifacts of the development of modern clean climbing and would display well with vintage mountaineering, Yosemite climbing, Chouinard, or Patagonia-related collections.
